Utah Lake Bass Fishing
Largemouth bass are thriving in Utah Lake's vegetated bays. Here's everything you need to know to catch them.
Largemouth Bass at Utah Lake
Utah Lake's largemouth bass fishery has been steadily improving, with Provo Bay emerging as one of the better bass fishing destinations in the Utah Valley. The lake's warm, shallow bays with extensive weed growth create ideal habitat for largemouth bass, and fish averaging 1-3 pounds are common with occasional fish in the 4-6 pound class.
While Utah Lake isn't known as a trophy bass destination, the combination of willing fish, beautiful scenery, and uncrowded conditions make it an excellent option for bass anglers, especially those in the Provo/Orem area who want quick access to good bass water.
Best Spots for Bass
Provo Bay — The Bass Hotspot
Provo Bay is the undisputed best bass fishing location on Utah Lake. This large, shallow bay on the southeast side features extensive weed beds, lily pads, and submerged vegetation. Bass relate to this cover throughout the warm months, and the bay's warm water temperatures attract bass earlier in spring than other parts of the lake.
Access: Best accessed by boat from Provo Harbor. Limited shore access exists but a boat opens up the best water.
Powell Slough
Connected to Provo Bay, Powell Slough offers sheltered, heavily vegetated water that holds bass through the season. This area can be productive when the main bay is windblown.
South Shore Vegetated Coves
Several vegetated coves along the south shore hold bass, particularly where weed growth meets deeper water. These are less pressured than Provo Bay and can produce quality fish.
Techniques That Work
Spinnerbaits
A 3/8 oz white or chartreuse spinnerbait is the most versatile bass lure on Utah Lake. Slow-roll it along weed edges and through openings in the vegetation. The spinnerbait's weedless design lets you fish heavy cover without constant snags.
Soft Plastics
Texas-rigged worms (6-inch green pumpkin or watermelon) and creature baits fished through heavy cover produce well. Ned rigs with small stick baits are effective during tough bites and cold-water periods.
Topwater
Topwater frogs over lily pads and weed mats are deadly during early morning hours in June-August. Few things in fishing match the excitement of a largemouth exploding on a topwater frog in the lily pads of Provo Bay.
Jigs
Flipping a 1/2 oz black/blue jig into heavy cover targets the bigger fish. Focus on isolated cover, dock pilings, and the densest weed clumps.
Seasonal Patterns
Spring (March - May)
Bass move shallow as water warms past 55°F. Pre-spawn and spawn occur in protected shallows — look for fish in 2-4 feet of water near cover. Jerkbaits and slow-moving soft plastics are effective. Spawning typically occurs when water reaches 62-68°F.
Summer (June - August)
Peak bass season. Fish relate to vegetation, and topwater action is best early morning and evening. Mid-day, fish move to shade and deeper weed edges. Spinnerbaits and soft plastics dominate. Night fishing with dark-colored lures can be extremely productive.
Fall (September - October)
Bass feed aggressively as water cools, fattening up before winter. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and chatterbaits along weed edges produce well. Fish can be found shallower than summer as water temps drop to the 60s.
Winter (November - February)
Bass go deep and become lethargic. Very slow presentations — drop shot, shaky head, or ned rig — in the deepest water you can find near Provo Bay. Most bass anglers put the rods away until spring, but dedicated anglers can still catch fish.
Gear Recommendations
- Rod: 7' medium-heavy baitcasting rod for spinnerbaits and jigs. 6'6" medium spinning rod for soft plastics and ned rigs.
- Line: 15-20 lb fluorocarbon or braid with fluoro leader for heavy cover. 8-10 lb fluorocarbon for finesse.
- Colors: White/chartreuse spinnerbaits, green pumpkin soft plastics, black/blue jigs. In stained water, go brighter.
