Utah Lake Catfish Scent Baits (Punch Bait, Dip Bait, Tubes) + Simple Holders
A practical guide to stinky baits for Utah Lake channel catfish: punch bait vs dip bait, bait holders (tubes/sponges), and a simple “less mess” kit — with Amazon links.
The simplest “it just works” scent-bait setup
- Hook: 4/0–6/0 circle hook (or a punch-bait tube setup).
- Bait: punch bait packed into a tube/holder (less flying off).
- Rig: sliding sinker rig or a simple bottom rig from Catfish Bank Fishing Kit.
If you’re new to Utah Lake catfish in general, start with the full rig checklist: catfish bank fishing kit.
Scent baits
Punch baits and dip baits can be absurdly effective — but they’re also messy. The trick is using a holder (tube/sponge) so you’re not re-baiting every cast.
Bait holders (tubes / sponge rigs)
- Punch bait tubes / holders (most common “no mess” setup)
- Dip bait worms / sponge holders (for dip bait)
- Treble hooks (only if your regs + ethics allow; usually skip)
Note: Always verify Utah regs for any hook style and number of hooks.
Less-mess kit (worth it)
Next upgrade: hook removal
Channel cats are tough, but hooks in thick mouths + head shakes are a recipe for finger punctures. Add a basic set of pliers + cutters to your kit and you’ll fish faster (and bleed less).
