Utah Lake Night Fishing Guide
Summer nights at Utah Lake produce some of the best fishing of the year. Cool temps, less pressure, and active catfish make after-dark trips incredibly productive.
Why Night Fishing at Utah Lake
Night fishing at Utah Lake is one of the best-kept secrets among local anglers. During the hot summer months when daytime temperatures push past 90°F, fish become more active after dark — especially channel catfish and largemouth bass. The cooler water temperatures and reduced fishing pressure make nighttime one of the most productive windows for shore and pier anglers.
Best Species for Night Fishing
Channel Catfish
Catfish are the undisputed kings of Utah Lake night fishing. Their excellent sense of smell makes them highly effective feeders in total darkness. Bottom fish with stink bait, chicken liver, or nightcrawlers near harbors and the state park pier for consistent action all summer long. The hours between 9 PM and midnight are typically the most productive.
Largemouth Bass
Bass in Provo Bay and other vegetated areas feed aggressively after dark during summer. Use dark-colored spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and large soft plastics fished slowly through the weed edges. Topwater lures create exciting surface strikes in calm conditions.
Best Night Fishing Locations
- Utah Lake State Park Pier — The pier has lighting and is accessible after dark. Excellent for catfish.
- Provo Boat Harbor — The breakwall and pier produce well at night for catfish and occasional walleye.
- Lincoln Beach — Shore fishing for catfish is outstanding on warm summer nights.
- Provo Bay — Boat anglers targeting bass after dark find excellent action in the weed beds.
Night Fishing Tips
- Bring a quality headlamp with a red-light mode to preserve your night vision
- Set up your fishing spot before dark — it's much easier to organize gear in daylight
- Use glow sticks or lighted bobbers to track your lines
- Bring warm layers even in summer — lakeside temperatures drop significantly after sunset
- Always tell someone where you'll be and when you expect to return
- Wear a personal flotation device if fishing near deep water
